Austria: Islamic Community Announces Nationwide Open-Mosque Day
CSPII Commentary: Is Interfaith Openness a One-Way Street? “Open Mosque Day” invites non-Muslims to discover Islam under the banner of interfaith understanding. Classical commentators interpreted Koan 25:72, 72:18 and 5:2 as condemning attendance at non-Muslim ceremonies, and Islamic authorities often draw strict boundaries around that. Mohammed distinguished Muslim festivals from those of other religions (Hadith Bukhari 952; Hadith Muslim 892a) and warned against following Jewish and Christian ways (Hadith Bukhari 7320; Hadith Muslim 2669a). IslamQA and IslamWeb prohibit participation in non-Muslim religious ceremonies, while even Egypt’s more permissive Dar al-Ifta excludes rituals contrary to Islam (Fatwa 3644).
