France faces female genital mutilation crisis, nearly 140,000 women affected

CSPII Commentary: France reports nearly 140,000 women affected by FGM. CSPII FGM Index 2026 shows the practice remains concentrated among Islamic populations and estimates far higher global numbers. Why? Although not named explicitly in the Koran, verse 30:30 requires adherence to the "fitrah." Hadith [Bukhari 5889] "Five practices are characteristics of Al-Fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, depilating the hair of armpits, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short."

CSPII Commentary: CSPII: A Nairobi workshop urged journalists from Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya to avoid euphemisms like “female circumcision” when reporting on FGM. N.B. Islamic doctrine endorses FGM. Koran 30:30 requires Muslims to 'adhere to the Fitra'—a set of practices that includes ‘khitan’—an Arabic word for the genital cutting of boys and girls.
