Somalia: Former Al-Shabaab Foes Agree to Sharia Rule and Cooperation with Jihadist Group
CSPII Commentary: The Hawadle are a large Sunni Muslim Somali clan, concentrated mainly in Hiraan in central Somalia, near the Ethiopian border; Hiraan has roughly 500,000–600,000 residents, and the Hawadle are its dominant clan. The significance is that Hawadle militias had been among the strongest local forces fighting al-Shabaab since 2022.
