The Jihad of Money in Islamic Doctrine

November 20, 2025

Topic Jihad Topic Finance

Jihad isn’t only a violent struggle. It’s also a financial one.

The Koran often links striving against non-Muslims (Kafirs) with money. The phrase “striving with their wealth and their lives” appears often (Koran 9:20, 4:95, 8:60, 9:88, 49:15, 9:41, 9:111).

Financial support for jihad is crucial, and those who give it are praised by Allah.

What’s more, the Koran makes jihad a duty for the Islamic community as a whole. It commands Muslims to collectively prepare and maintain military strength and send out part of the community to fight, while the rest support them (Koran 9:122, 8:60).

This means Islamic doctrine tells Muslims – both individually and as a community – that they must use their money to fund jihad against Kafirs.

Koran 9:20

Those who have believed, emigrated, and strived in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah. It is they who will triumph.

Koran 4:95

Those of the believers who sit still, other than those who have a (disabling) hurt, are not on an equality with those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah hath conferred on those who strive with their wealth and lives a rank above the sedentary…

Koran 8:60

Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not. Allah knoweth them. Whatsoever ye spend in the way of Allah it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged.

Koran 9:88

But the messenger and those who believe with him strive with their wealth and their lives. Such are they for whom are the good things. Such are they who are the successful.

Koran 49:15

The (true) believers are those only who believe in Allah and His messenger and afterward doubt not, but strive with their wealth and their lives for the cause of Allah. Such are the sincere.

Koran 9:41

Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! That is best for you if ye but knew.

Koran 9:111

Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain.

Koran 9:122

And the believers should not all go out to fight. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.
