Political Islam and its International Implications at The Institute for World Politics

November 21, 2024

This informative two-part lecture given at IWP by CSPII lecturers Maria Schwaz and Johann Turnau is a must-see!

In the first part, Maria gives an excellent overview of the life of Mohammed as recounted in the Islamic texts, moves on to a brief overview of the history of the Islamic conquest in Africa, Asia Minor, and Europe, and then provides a seamless bridge to the events we see around us today. This comprehensive talk touches on a variety of subjects that will open your eyes to the importance of Islamic doctrine and its influence on current events.

In the second part, Johann builds on the information given by Maria to explore the national security and diplomatic challenges presented by Political Islam. He compares and contrasts Islamic political systems governed by the Sharia to modern democratic systems by discussing the differences between the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights Under Islam to the UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights. He then focuses on Sharia and the OIC's efforts to bring aspects of Sharia to legal systems in non-Islamic countries, using the UN and our own laws as a vehicle to accomplish this aim.
