International Day of Living Together in Peace

May 14, 2024

The United Nations established this day to “uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony.”

In two previous posts (Submission of the Kafir in Islamic Political Doctrine and What Does Islamic Peace Look Like?), we explained both non-Islamic and Islamic vision of peace. For the Kafir society, “peace” means the absence of war and violence, whereas Political Islam defines peace as global submission to Allah and Mohammed, accomplished via the communal obligation to wage jihad (using both violent and non-violent tactics) on the Kafirs until they submit.

What do Islamic foundational texts (Koran, Sira, and Hadith) state about living together when Islamic rule is established in an Islamic state? Political Islam offers the Kafir two options that guarantee his survival and “protection.” He may convert to Islam or become a "dhimmi.”

If the Kafir converts to Islam, he becomes a full citizen; his life and properties will then be protected (1).

If he does not wish to convert, the Kafir can retain his own religion, but assumes the role of “dhimmi", a second-class citizen who must pay a special tax, the "jizya,” and be humiliated (2).

Mohammed set the example when he made the first dhimmis out of the peaceful Jewish farmers of Khaybar, a town two days' travel from Medina. Mohammed victoriously led his army in a surprise jihad attack, conquered the town, and took the Jews’ property as war spoils (including captives). The surviving Jews made an agreement called “dhimma” with Mohammed. If they gave the Islamic community half their profits, they could stay and farm the land. After hearing about Khaybar, the Jews of Fadak, a nearby town, panicked and asked Mohammed to spare their lives in exchange for half their profits, becoming dhimmis (3, 4).

Allah declares in eighty-nine verses of the Koran that Mohammed is the perfect example for all humanity, to be followed and obeyed (5); therefore, Mohammed's command to spread Islamic political rule by making jihad on Kafirs until they submit, i.e., either convert to Islam or live as second class citizens providing sustenance to the Islamic community via the jizya, is eternal (6, 7, 8).

The UN's intention behind the creation of this day is quite different from the Islamic political vision of "living together in peace."

3. Hadith Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 39, Hadith 531”…When Allah's Messenger had conquered Khaibar, he wanted to expel the Jews from it as its land became the property of Allah, His Apostle, and the Muslims. Allah's Messenger intended to expel the Jews but they requested him to let them stay there on the condition that they would do the labor and get half of the fruits. Allah's Messenger told them, "We will let you stay on thus condition, as long as we wish." So, they (i.e. Jews) kept on living there until `Umar forced them to go towards Taima' and Ariha'.”
