How Can We Understand Islam?

February 6, 2025

People try to understand what Islam is because they see and feel its impact on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

We will not find answers to our questions by referring only to the text of the Koran. It is insufficient because it presents only 14% of all Islamic doctrine (1). It has no coherent stories, the chronological order of the verses is broken, and it is full of repetition.

Mohammed is the key to understanding Islam. We can read about Mohammed in his biography (Sira) and stories from his life (Hadith).

These three texts (the "Trilogy")—the Koran, the Sira and the Hadith—define Islam and should be taken as a whole.
